Gytha hurried all the way from Potter's Crack to the castle because Pat Herbig reckoned Verence was giving away chickens tthanks to Magrat's 'food for all' Hogswatch Royal Message.

Not a single chicken left. Her source was trustworthy – if there was any certainty in life it was that Herbig knows.

There was nothing here. Nothing but the castle walls; grey stone painted in shades of grey. And Black.

Gytha huffed. "You're supposed to save the chickens to lay eggs."

Esme Weatherwax stepped away from that wall, still holding four dead chickens. "Really," she said. "Where would I have kept them?"

There were several reasons that Sybil Ramkin passed forty and didn’t marry. She said that it was because she didn’t meet men that shared her interest in dragons and when she did, they were already in pairs. The truth was because she’d been instructed to see marriage in shades of grey but she just couldn’t. She couldn’t look the other way like her female ancestors did when their husbands strayed. She looked at Sam’s anxious face and the humble ring he was offering. She’d never need to share him with another woman just the Watch. She could accept that.

"Yes."

The stench from Constable Littlebottom's workshop (really just the old privy)was terrible. It cleared the watch house as every watchman remembered urgent business out on the street. Unlicensed Thieves in the cells begged and demanded to be taken to the Thieves' Guild. Sargent Angua had to take the day off with a headache and even Nobby commented on the smell .

Commander Vimes took in in his stride. There wasn't too much shouting. After the inquiry he had canteen teapot put on a long chain to keep it in the canteen and allowed constable Littlebottom to buy new alchemical glassware.

He filled the carefully warmed pot with five spoons of an inexpensive blend that never-the-less cost a week's wages. Nearby, his mother crusaded against non-existent disorder, fervent as any ideological champion. Her pride was a tangible inferno, determined to smite anything not conforming to the ephemeral Standards.

An officious man flanked by trolls entered their pristinely maintained residence, following a perfunctory knock, and countered the customary offer of tea with the abrupt command:
"Rent."

After their last penny was diligently displaced into the impatient grasp the guests departed, bearing away hopes for groceries but bequeathing a cooling pot of tea.

Gytha Ogg smiled as the last of judges of the Amateur Lancre Winemaker's Guild began snoring. "That's that, then," she said to the other members as she gathered up the cup for the fourth year running. "Nobody objects to me taking this, do they?"

Nobody did.

"I think you're a little unfair on those poor people," said the queen, when they were back in the warmth of Gytha's kitchen. "Your recipe is unothodox."

"There's no rules about religion, young Magrat," said Nanny, lighting her pipe. "I make wine the same as anyone, I just start with scumble instead o' water."

Patterns are noticed, ideas coalesce...

No-one can remember who the robed figure was, though stories tell of sourcerers, demons, kings and heroes. Of him there remained only porcelain figurines, used by certain individuals as charms - idols depicting the messiah of their green-eyed Goddess. One, departing a dice game substantially enriched, idly brushed a porcelain hat as a stray thought thanked a Lady.

The building in whose shadow he walked acknowledged its years.

After they aggregated enough splatter the examining Igor proclaimed the death accidental and instant. The belongings were returned to his family: a full purse and an undamaged figurine.

It was strange how history could change, contemplated Vimes, as he walked around the stone kings, with his son in his arms.

He'd seen it happen before. The murderer of a king became the man who did what needed to be done, when no-one else dared. There was even a statue.
Now the slayer of trolls became a peace maker. The kings themselves were the statue in honour of a peace that should have been made centuries ago.

The legend was a lie and a new one grew up around the truth.

No doubt it would change again, in time.

Jason Ogg’s closet is not a walk-in closet, or a stand-in closet, or even a huddle-moaning-quietly-in closet. It's a wall with a curtain nailed to it. But it has a back.

The suit what has got bells on but is dyed inexplicably black-- that hangs in the back. Jason's wife pauses over it sometimes, not quite daring to wonder. It smells like a promise of snow: burying her nose in it makes old songs come to mind, unbidden.

She gets on with the laundry, of course; she does not, say, contemplate symmetry, or smile.

But she hums as she scrubs.
